Great Tit

Description

My cats tend to make a bit of  fuss if another cat walks by outside or if a bird lands on the branches of a shrub out the front. On this occasion it was the latter - this great tit. It made a nice change from the more numerous blue tits around here that I usually see, so I grabbed my camera. The photo's not quite as sharp as I'd like I was shooting downwards through a double-glazed window!

This reminds me of my experiences with birds in my native Southern California. We have a bird feeder in our back yard, and usually the main birds that use it is native Goldfinches and House finches. We later put a feeder in our front yard next to the hummingbird feeder with a different type of feed. However, it soon became apparent that the only birds it was feeding was the invasive House Sparrows, who simply sat in the trough and greedily ate all the seed. We later took the feeder down and I remembered my father telling me a story more than a decade ago that some fools 100 years ago decided that it would be cool that America would have every bird described in the works of Shakespeare. This included House Sparrows.
