At the zoo today I watched this tiger sniff something on the ground and then do the gaping mouth thing that domestic cats also do after sniffing something that smells strongly/of interest. Unlike domestic cats tigers also dangle their tongue out as well, it seems :). Apparently it's called the "flehmen response" and they're drawing air into the vomeronasal organ.

Wow, awesome! I wish I saw a tiger at the zoo I went to! This tiger has really yellow teeth, and look at his big tongue.

Yup, the infamous 'stinky face' they pull to gain extra data on the odors they sense. I've often done similar when testing for moisture in the air, but it's more of a 'sniffing with mouth' trick than a full-on flehmen response.
